Thinking about the narcissistic Republicans who study themselves in mirror thinking how beautiful and righteous they are. If they find imperfection in themselves they blame others. Their righteousness stinks. Look no farther that Matt Gaetz. “And his hair was perfect”. -Warren Zevon

Oklahoma today is an illustration of what American might be like tomorrow. To paraphrase Louis Brandeis, the states are becoming “the laboratories of autocracy”.

Kareem, I look forward to your newsletter and devour it with my first cup of coffee of the morning. Your thoughts on air pollution and how awful it will be by 2054 made me think of the chart from https://climatereanalyzer.org/clim/sst_daily/ which shows daily sea surface temperature. For almost a year, temperature is off the map. We don't know how this change will affect us but it won't be good. Do you think we as people feel powerless and thus don't want to think about this? Or is it habituation where we get used to the changes and they become normal?

I am a history major and I love Womens History Month in March, Black history month in Februrary, and Asian American History Month in May. . Why not make each month a "history month"? Muslim History month, Gay History Month, North east history month? Mid West history month? How cool would that be.....oops I forgot - that would be "woke"- we would be learning too much- can't have that in America, only White History year every year all the time.

I have a dream... ( was I supposed to learn about that speech or was it "woke" as well? It's hard to tell) (Sarcasm)

Thank you so much.

Per the hapless golf advice giver--I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to approach someone who possessed a potential weapon. :D

Kareem, I just love your stuff. Your perspective as a black man is something I’ll obviously never have. Thanks for your Substack.

One thing I’ve been thinking about…. I’d like to consider myself pretty rational, that I can have a conversation about issues or just about anything without getting emotional.

I don’t know whether I’m just getting older (68), more tired, not as sharp (for sure), suffering from an echo chamber influence, or what. But it’s getting to where I can’t have conversations with people on the other side anymore without wanting to crawl down their throats and rip half their organs out.

I’m just THROUGH trying to reason with the unreasonable, speak logically to the illogical, talk sense to the senseless, and I don’t know when that’ll change. I’ve been pretty calm since Nixon, thinking the crazies will soon see the light of day, but there have been a lot of sunny days over almost 60 years and it’s seems to be getting *darker*, not brighter.

I’ve become more intolerant, more entrenched in my thoughts, quicker to anger to the point of rage. I KNOW that’s not how to solve this, but I’m getting to the point I just don’t have any more ***** to give.

So, again, THANK YOU for NEVER giving up, because the fight will NEVER be over if we quit.

Did anyone catch Biden's comments on education last night? (in case you missed it):

"I met a year and a half ago with the leaders of the Business Roundtable. They were mad that I — they were angry — well, they were discussing why I wanted to spend money on education. I pointed out to them as vice president, I met with over eight — I think it was 182 of those folks. Don’t hold me to the exact number. And I asked them what they need most. The CEOs. And you’ve had the same experience on both sides of the aisle, they say a better educated workforce, right?

So I looked at them and I say I come from Delaware, DuPont used to be the eighth largest corporation in the world and every new enterprise they bought, they educated the workforce to that enterprise, but none of you do that anymore. Why are you angry with me providing you the opportunity for the best educated workforce in the world?"

This has been a double-edged sword for big business (government too). On the one hand they want an educated workforce, but on the other hand they want to continue the dumbing-down of America (easier to fleece an uneducated consumer). I'm not in the least bit surprised. Another related comment made by Biden referenced semi-conductor chips and other manufacturing jobs regaining strength in America. We wouldn't be in this position if we didn't farm out all the manufacturing to other nations back in the late '80's/'90's. Careful what you wish for - you just might get it. What went around, came around. Karma is indeed a bitch. BTW, couldn't MTG afford a 2024 version of her MAGA cap?

While they're at it, why don't they create a database of all men in their state who get Viagra prescriptions and drugs for venereal diseases?

Kareem,

A lack of self awareness and unwillingness to be honest about the facts...these two attributes combine in both the individuals and in the collective consciousness of the Republican Party! A critical mass of congnitive dissonance makes it impossible for them to change course!

It is completely on those of us of all stripes and political persuasions to associate together and organize in order to beat down this threat to our democracy and way of life! Thanks for your clarifying description of what is...we just can't afford to ignore the facts and pretend things are not the way they are! Peace always, Mike

Kareem, I admire your concern and humanity, and I know you are very aware of history, but my view is that at least 80% of world leaders, especially those who ran the whole show, kings, Czars, the Pinochets, the Stalins, Putins, and the wannabes like Trump, are totally concerned with money and power. The people they rule are there to pay them and serve them. Also, they almost always claim to have some kind of god on their side. In America it’s true in Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, and the entire MAMA Republican Party. They are most afraid of capable, assertive, confident women. They have to confine and control them. They know that if they have to compete fairly with them they don’t stand a chance. And today is International Women's Day!

Regarding Oklahoma, I think their proposed database violates HIPAA since patient records are meant to be kept confidential. But perhaps they don’t believe in HIPAA as it applies to pregnant people, especially since it’s a national law.

Kareem, the picture depicting the air quality over the Williamette River, is a great vision of what it was like when visiting Los Angeles in 1958, and where I came to live in 1963. By then, it was worse! A morning that began clear and sunny, became thick with smoke and fog (smog) by noon. The results: Burning, watery eyes, irritated lungs, the taste of gross fumes, coughing! Visibility literally zero, which included not seeing your own hands before your eyes. One could be driving, then suddenly, a cloud of smog—leading to car accidents, a pedestrian being struck, hearing the smog alarm going off, warning citizens that the quality of air had become harmful. It was bad! Should those days return, it won’t be a pretty picture.
