“Even if we’re part of a squadron, we’re still just solo pilots…”. Another beautiful turn of phrase from Mr KAJ. Thank you.

Super Bowl Sunday? WGAS! Scripted/fixed (or a term popular with MAGA's...rigged). Here goes: the game will be close, but the Niners will lead going into the 4th quarter. The Niners may possibly score another 3, but the Chiefs will pull out a "miraculous come from behind victory"...with TS being shown on TV more than the players celebrating on the field. The NFL sucks! Might as well watch "Oak Island". Usher will be the highlight of the evening. Got to hand it to the NFL - the heartland of America is safer than a sanctuary city in terms of public image/relations. I hope to see Sam Darnold take a snap.

Last week, my dad commented that he has so much wisdom, but nobody wants to listen. First of all, he doesn't have a vagina, so why would his wisdom of being a man who grew up in the 50s/60s and had a stay at home wife and worked with only men for the first part of his career apply to my life at all? He left my mother when I was 29. Our relationship consists of me periodically emailing him and he responds. He has no relationship with my 3 children. Why would I possibly want his advice? So, whenever I hear "in my day," I immediately tune out. And I try never to use that phrase.

I’m getting to this column a little late this week - it’s great as always - I’m sorry I’m so late in reading it, I had to wash my cats butt. Lol.

As a retired teacher and also a mother that raised two children, I agree that we have to let them try to fly on their own. I always tried to lead by example and held back advice unless asked. I enjoyed your approach to this topic.

RE: Immigration / Ukraine. There can be no question repugnicans are only interested in one thing - power. If they think they’re going to get a better immigration bill passed in January, they’re wrong. If they think it’s OK if Russia defeats Ukraine, they’re wrong. If they think not passing a higher child credit on tax returns, plus tax breaks corporations want, because it might make Biden look good, they’re wrong. But since it’s all about making sure Biden doesn’t look good, I guess it doesn’t matter how bad it makes repugnicans look.

RE: Florida. Am I discouraged about the latest bit of outright stupidity coming out of that state? Yes. Am I surprised? No.

If there are so many issues with executions, why not just stop killing people? The Bible, which so many claim to follow, says “Thou Shall Not Kill.” It doesn’t go on to say “unless the crime was especially heinous and the execute-ee deserves it.”

If you’re so hell-bent on killing people, bring back the guillotine. No failures with that, and my guess is death is pretty quick.

Kareem, while I agree with your comments about the politics of appeasement, France was not annexed while Britain was ignoring Nazi Germany. The war in Europe started on 1 September 1939, and both UK and France declared war on Germany. French army was defeated and part of France occupied in 1940, while another part became a Nazi puppet state. But what is interesting to note (and I wrote about this elsewhere) is that Putin's speech before the invasion of Ukraine (speech was delivered on 21 February 2022) is very similar to Hitler's speech before the invasion of Sudetenland on 1 October 1938. While I doubt that someone was consciously plagiarizing Hitler, it is remarkable how the minds of totalitarian assassins operate in a strikingly similar way. (Psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas calls it "the fascist state of mind.")

I have loved Joni ever since I heard her first album when it was first released. Over time, my particular favorites changed and I would say that Hejira and The Hissing of Summer Lawns are my desert island JM picks. In particular, I think the Hissing of Summer Lawns is one of the all time great albums in any genre. Not an important comment, I fear, but in keeping with your excellent music choices, I thought I'd pitch (no pun) in.

Kareem. In case you have a sweet tooth or just want to share, Sprinkles has a special cupcake for Year of the Dragon, in conjunction with the Bruce Lee Foundation and Gold House. Red velvet cake, slivered almonds in the frosting. Only available for local pickup and only until February 11, so I'm told .

The news is depressing. But you bring it more into focus with your commentary. The MAGA crowd in Congress (and likely all too many of their constituents) ignore the lessons of history re their resistance to support of Ukraine. Britain's - and our - failure to confront Hitler's aggression cost us the horror of WW2. If we don't continue to bulwark Ukraine against Putin's aggression, there is a helluva big chance we will segue inevitably into WW3.

Florida provides sort of a mini version of Hitler's program to mold Germany's populace to his will.

When I think back to my adolescent follies, I can't conceive now just what the hell got into me to do such idiotic things. But I think that with my kids, I didn't try to equate my times with theirs - just telling them, "you're gonna do what you're gonna do, no matter what - but you then have to deal with the consequences." And i remember some of my consequences weren't very pleasant.

MTG epitomizes the failure of our electorate to make reasoned choices on who to select as their representatives in the halls of Congress. Meanwhile, many of those who put service above self (sure, every politician has a bigger than normal ego, but there are some who wont let it obviate that desire to serve) and are then shunned - and ousted - by their party and their constituents

I'm in total agreement with you re the death penalty. Sure there are heinous crimes that revolt us to the point we want instant retribution. But then that's time to reflect - are we to just appease our savage reaction by inflicting what is more than likely to be a cruel and torturous death on the perp?

I've always like to listen to Joni Mitchell...for some reason my favorite is just the little ditty, "Parking Lot" that she has such fun with!

Keep up the good work, Kareem!
