Brazile's comments about Ramaswamy brings to mind the anecdote about Eisenhower when he was commanding the Allied offensive in North Africa. He dismissed and sent home one of the American staff officers in his headquarters after a (verbal) fight where he insulted a British staff officer. The reason, he said, was not because the American had called the British officer an SOB, it was because he called him a British SOB. Now the point Eisenhower was making was that his headquarters was an allied one, and while he knew that there would be disagreements and antagonisms within his staff, he was not tolerating nationalistic rivalries. It also made the point that the conflict better be based on something substantial, not irrelevancies such as where one was born. While the situation between Barzile and Ramaswamy is not quite analogous (they are political enemies after all), the basic principle is the same. Ramaswamy may be (and I think he is) a dangerous jerk with horrible ideas, but that is all on him, not his parentage. It is possible to take the high road and come out swinging at an opponent. Kareem does that in just about every newsletter, and is more effective for it.

Von Miller and CTE - the man is obviously mentally deranged, but the NFL will probably just suspend him for a few games, the Bills will most likely release him, and not one person (other than yours truly) will call out the probability that this man's brains are scrambled...and get him the help that he requires. The NFL sucks! Take care of your own peeps. If I can see it, the NFL medical teams probably see it too (blind eye time!). It's not just Miller - CTE is real, and effects dozens of current players, and countless former players. RIP Dave Duerson!

Perhaps Irsay was showing his bias against union members . It would explain the chaotic management of personnel of the Indianapolis Colts.

"She's Gone" is the best song on a record full of wonderful music, and probably the best song they every wrote...agree completely with your assessment...and it came out 2 years before "Sara Smile" and "Rich Girl" made them famous...produced by the great Arif Mardin on Atlantic records which gave us so much great R&B and soul music...

While on the subject of rich, white men melting down:

Elon Musk - go "fork" yourself! This man is a complete social moron. Wouldn't be surprised if Trump chose him as a VP running mate. Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?

The reason you’re so tall is because you’re so deep. Wonderful, profound breakdowns in so many topics. Rap on.

Thanks as always Kareem for your very thoughtful and fact based commentary. I don’t always agree with you, but I always respect what you have to say. For the record I am to the left of you, and I think both major parties are different servants of the same system. Anyway, It’s really unfortunate and stupid that Donna Brazille sought to belittle Vivek for his ethnicity and deliberately mispronounced his name, instead of addressing his right wing politics, which are not much different than any of the other Republican politicians.

And the poor discriminated against Billionaire. So sad, but pulleeez!

As to all the super affluent people that plan to leave if Trump is reelected, you’re right that the fight is here and it doesn’t do the world any good if people check out simply because they can.

I so dig your opening quotes and musical interludes. I appreciate your appreciation for music generally. When you had the theme from Shaft as your interlude after Richard Roundtree’s last month I had to listen to the soundtrack again. One of the best movie soundtracks of all time in my opinion. I think that Hall and Oates did have a cool sound in their early days, but if you haven’t checked out Daryl Hall’s “Daryl’s House” videos, you should. Many musical guests, and one of the best is Smokey...

Keep it coming Kareem!!! I read your newsletter every week and am always inspired and enlightened by it.

The diner scene in "Five Easy Pieces" is one of the top memorable movie pieces!

It was sad to see Brazile emulating Trump and trumpist Republicans! She needs a time out to reflect on her behavior!

Donna Brazile was disrespectful and racist to Vivek Ramaswamy; she gets no pass just because tRUMP does the same thing (calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” for instance).

I live in a senior residential community (old folks’ home) and our waitstaff and care-giving attendants are primarily non- white. Some have adopted Americanized names because the residents can’t/won’t remember their actual names or pronounce them correctly.

I’m sort of a one-woman crusade to use their proper name and show how easy it is for my fellow residents. A beautiful name like Laksme should not have to be “Americanized” to Lisa just because people are too lazy to learn.

To mangle someone’s name, when you hold a position of power and a vast bully pulpit, is juvenile behavior.

Thank you Kareem for a great Substack! I agree with ALL your comments regarding the Republican Party - what has happened to the Party of Lincoln? Well, It's been hijacked by extremists. I have always valued opposing opinions/viewpoints and working together to find solutions and deliver results.....our leaders are so far away from this concept. I still think we live in a great country, and it amazes me, despite all the infighting and chaos, we still find a way to keeping moving forward. I love the new Movie Masterpiece idea and need to see Five Easy Pieces. Could swear they are sitting in a diner (now a Denny's) in Glenwood, Oregon with Interstate 5 in the background.

Great post. And you are so right about Donna Brazile being disrespectful to Vivek Ramaswamy, even if he is unfit to be POTUS. I worked at a software/engineering firm for 30 years. Many of our software engineers came from Russia and India or their parents or grandparents did. I prided myself on learning how to pronounce the more difficult names (difficult for English speakers anyway). Our COO saw no reason to do so, and I always thought it was extremely disrespectful. Keep shouting the truth Kareem. You do so beautifully.

I think showcasing classic films in your substack is a great idea. Go for it. I may not agree, and you might consider asking a poll for those of us who are film buffs, as to what constitutes classic and good/great. Love your work.

Sorry, not sorry to comment twice on one post... but you are dead wrong my friend regarding leaving the country if Trump is re elected! So wrong. I love to receive your posts but this Canadian girl is calling you out. Big time. I bought a home in Naples Florida in 2010. Reason? I had chronic migraines that were relieved in Florida. ( stable barometric pressure) I was also one of those that said “ If Trump is elected, I’m leaving”... but by then I had made many new American friends. I didn’t want to leave them. Then I saw the racism and indiscriminate use of power from Trump and supported by the GOP, and I said to my friends: “ this guy scares me, he’s looking for a civil war... he does not want to give up power”. I was laughed at in a denigrating way. When Jan 6 happened, that was it. I put the home up for sale, sold, and got outta Dodge. Reason? I can’t vote as a Canadian, but I can vote with my money. I refused to keep my money in the US. If more people of substance objected to the GOP, and actually followed up with the threat( like this Canadian town mouse), then there would be power to the cause. Simply objecting to the nonsense does nothing Kareem. Action moves mountains. Money (or lack there of) moves mountains. As we moved our money back into Canada, I had never felt so fortified as a liberal, democrat and human.

My money is here, 🇨🇦 under my direction. Definitely not under the discretion of the tired, overworked, and under appreciated citizens of the US... whose friendship and support I have come to know; but whose very existence has been undermined for hundreds of years by their own government.

The foundation has changed. I saw it, felt it and experienced it. It’s not good. Americans need to wake up to the fact that the world sees your demise. A wait and see attitude ain’t gunna work.... and honestly, Canadians are worried about being your neighbour.

Spot on regarding the bogus mispronunciation. It was purposeful; also sad , and disappointing. Ugh. When will the Dems get the hell out of their own way?... should we talk about Biden?!!

I hope you'll keep the new Kareem's Masterpiece Movie Vault, as I'll look forward to seeing whatever other classics you come up with. Also, loved this remark: “A Kareem by any other name would skyhook as sweet.” Glad to see that in these dark times you still haven't lost your sense of humor.
