A Troubling Week in News Media… This has been a troubling but revelatory week concerning the news media. Fox News admitted they lied for ratings money (more on that later). This is not a hysterical socialist conspiracy theory but verifiable facts from the mouths of Fox’s owners, executives, and on-air hosts. They lied. For years. They admitted it. You can’t spin that (though they and their viewers will try).
Kareem, since we’re dealing with facts, Kellyanne’s correct phrasing was “alternative facts.” And whereas, one may disagree with Rachel Maddow’s opinions, I like the fact that she primarily does investigative research of her material, in an attempt to be factual-based, fair and honest.
Re: Fox News and lies, let’s go back. Does anybody remember the Bush-Gore Florida call, that landed in the lap of the Republican Supreme Court? Originally, Gore was declared the winner. In real time, we were told that Barbara Bush had Jeb to call Katherine Harris (Sec’y of State for FL) and Fox to undo the call. They did! Manning the Election Desk at Fox News, and the person to whom the Bushes were talking all night, was their FIRST COUSIN, John Ellis. Hours into the night, he called FL for George W. The other stations followed, although all later rescinded. However, once that call was made, the ILLUSION was that Bush had won, and as they say, the rest is history. My point is, Rupert Murdoch’s FOX, has been impacting the country for years, with their lies, distortions, and slander: Hillary’s emails, Obama’s birth certificate, The Big Lie, the insurrection. They are finally being taken to task, so my hat is off to Dominion for having the gumption and fortitude to pursue this lawsuit! I wish them well!
As a Gen Xer from the Boston area, I remembered you as one of the people who helped serve up some great disappointment to my teenaged self in 1985 and 1987!
But now I am happy to have found your excellent newsletter, and I have great appreciation for your commentary on current events. Thank you!

You might consider including your guidance on a future post. It's of course a vital issue, and I'm sure you have quite a few subscribers connected directly and indirectly to healthcare who could benefit from your perspective.
I kind of miss the days when I believed that one side of "an offer he can't refuse" involved something serious like the head of a guy's dead horse in bed with him. But Tucker, and guys like him, lie so they won't have to endure the indignity of honest work and something like a modest paycheck. Or Kevin McCarthy, who sold his soul for the dubious honor of being Speaker of the House, and relinquished any shred of human dignity by handing the gavel over to the clinically insane Margery Taylor Greene. What a world.
Money isn't the only thing that motivates old man Murdoch. Power & prestige. Kingmaker. How many wives? He just divorced Jerry Hall, Mick Jagger's ex. Truth telling has never been his forte, no matter where he has planted himself. How is it that he is not the "other?" He's not even from America. Oh I get it. He's white & rich. Fox news is not talking about any of this at all. They don't want their constituents to know the truth about their lies. Not that it would even matter to those who still believe agent Orange won in 2020.
Oh what a tangled web we weave
When first we practise to deceive.
Perhaps one day those despicable "hosts" at Fox will see themselves in a real mirror and be horrified at their deceit. Perhaps they will collapse & apologize for their iniquities. Such total & complete hypocrites. Into the morass with all of them - headfirst.
Thank you for the music. Lakecia Benjamin and her sax. What a really terrific artist.
Happy Sunday to you all. And thank you Kareem for all your writings. And really loud cheers to Steph & the Warriors last night in their OT win. Great game. 🏀
Sometimes I just feel overwhelmed by all the crazy news. I feel powerless to stop the right wing insanity. Reading your newsletter helps me fight this anxiety.
Why? Because you articulate so much of what I’m feeling. Your thoughts are a balm for my soul. Thank you so much!!!
As always, thank you for summing up this wild and crazy world. Meanwhile, Walgreens is my local pharmacy where I get all my prescriptions filled. Trying to stay on top of technology but boycotting will be a pain in my you know where. What to do???
Well to sum up: Fox lies for money; Trump lies for money; the Pillow guy lies for money; there is systemic racism in America and the GOP can’t stand it nor do they want to talk about it; Black people die un proportionately after elective surgery - mostly because ( I think) their pre-existing conditions were not addressed and managed therefore were probably worsened by the surgery; and remember Trump will lie every minute of every day to every single person including himself, his wife, his children etc.
Fox “News” will never change until the money starts to dry up. They’ve cultivated an extreme and loyal audience. Very little can be done to change this. I trust my news sources and would be suspicious if suddenly it was revealed that they were not reporting legitimate news. I would question the political motivations. So, what can be done? Lightning will not strike to change people’s trust, transparency is the key to honesty and building trust. Elected officials and their institutions must commit to transparency and to the slow process of trust building.
There is only one thing in thing is this world that motivates the Fox Organization and that is money. Money is behind every decision it makes. There's no right nor wrong, there's only money. If Mr. Murdoch had thirty trillion dollars in U.S. Treasury Bonds he'd want thirty trillion more. There are no morals there. Perhaps there is no hatred at Fox either. Their biggest strength is love which unfortunately is a love for money and nothing else.
Good article and an impressive reference to the Catholic clergy whose "interpretation" of the Bible sometimes resembles judicial interpretation of the law.

I gotta say, I did not expect to see a reference to Lily Taylor. She's like M Emmet Walsh; any movie she's in can't be all bad

If Tucker Carlson vehemently hates Trump, could it be possible that he voted for Biden?

Re: Fox “News”, Tucker and Rupert. The word prostitution comes immediately to mind. That’s about it ... thanks as always for being here.
I have a crush on Lily Taylor bigger than a Chinese spy balloon. How's *that* for a pop culture reference?
