Sorry, one last comment: I consider myself conservative, but compared to my friends I'm a ranting liberal nutcase.
The Consevatives whom. by the way, seem to be synonymous with the Evangelical right, are "on board" with educating their children....to a point! That "point" is when their education broadens beyond their limited way of thinking. They abhor free thinkers. Ironically, the final destination of education!!!
As usual, your comments are spot on. Your careful analysis and research exposes the careless, naive and frankly irresponsible "takes" our self professed leaders spout. I feel if they were better read, they would take a better path, albeit an "unelectable" one. The could start with "Animal House". Unfortunately, they vomit what the uninformed want to hear, not what they need to hear.
That said, what a clown car that debate was! Maybe I'm at a disadvantage, having stayed awake during civics class, but someone needs to sit these people down and explain that our form of government IS NOT A DICTATORSHIP! "When elected, I am going to 'singularly' do this or do that." How arrogant! NO...you gotta get that dysfunctional legislative branch "onboard"! (ref. Civics class). "Diplomacy", "compromise" and "reasonable, productive negotiations" are ignorantly deplored. Yet, they are necessary tenants in meeting the intent of our constutional authors. They were wise enough to even build a government that required them.
Our forefathers had extensive libraries that included the great philosophers and world history...as well as, they apparently possesed an inate as well as an accuired understanding that "tyrany" was not an acceptable form of government.
Good leadership and "narcissism" are not compatible. I.e. a dictatorship. The Marines teach their officers that if you are going to be a good leader, make sure your troops eat first.
Maybe make a stint in the "corps" before public office a constitutional ammendment...lol
My hearty congratulations for your Billions appearance last night. It was thrilling to see you on the show after admiring your “skyhook” poster that’s been hanging in Michael Princes office this season. I can’t tell you how much your presence on the show has made me smile.
As a longtime admirer and subscriber of yours, I’ve loved seeing you both in skyhook mode and actually on the show last night.
Thank you for your work, your words of sound thought and your acting.
I just discovered how DeSantis might have come up with his racist notion that Blacks benefited from slavery. In Jon Meacham's new book, And There Was Light; Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle, chapter 11: The Hateful Embrace of Slavery, gives in detail the thinking of slavery expansionists in the run up to the Civil War. "We anticipate no terminus to the institution of slavery," William H Holcombe of New Orleans wrote in 1860. We are looking outward toward Chihuahua, Sonora, and other parts of Mexico -- to Cuba and even to Central America." Meacham also mentions the 'Knights of the Golden Circle' who were in favor of Cuba as the center of a projected slave empire, as well as William Walker, an adventurer who seized control of Nicaragua and reinstituted slavery from 1856-57, who stated "if we look at Africa in the light of universal history, we see her ... a mere waif on the waters of the world ... But America was discovered ... The white man took the negro from his native wastes , and teaching him the arts of life, and bestowed on him the ineffable blessings of a true religion."
The Bud Light boycott is weird on so many levels. You are right about the people who lost their jobs. But is also resulted in a Mexican Beer usurping an American Beer as #1 in sales. What's MAGA about that?
I read Dan Pfeiffer’s compelling argument that Vivek Ramaswamy will likely become the new face of the Republican Party. It’s a dire warning that makes me depressed. Now that I’ve read Mr. Abdul-Jabbar’s eve-opening revelations, I feel that it’s time, well, past time for a wider audience to hear his wisdom. What cable anchor and show should offer him a regular gig? I said one of the MSNBC shows; my husband prefers a morning show on ABC, CBS, or NBC. Thoughts?
Thank you for Bola Sete and Vince Guaraldi. It's been so many years since I've listened to their wonderful music. And the basketball ref dancing with the kids. Really terrific!
All the black women being murdered. Frightening! I have a niece who lives in Iowa. It's also about gay women & their partners & families. She has a great job with a university, but is making plans to move because of increasing animosity & threats. So wrong & totally evil. There's no other way to look at it. And they have young children.
Thank you for your research and your thoughts. Keep the music coming.
Kareem: I agree this was a great column. Back on April 8th of this year Phil Kable wrote in the Charleston (WV) gazette about an anti-ESG bill passed by the West Virginia Legislature and posed the question: Will going anti-woke cause the state (WV) to go broke? They didn't even listen to the head of the board that manages state investments.
Your newsletter always encourages me to dig deeper into stories. I found that your comment about 19% of Americans being skeptical about the Earth being a globe, or believing it is flat, had to be way off. I discovered it was closer to a reality than not! For various reasons, people actually believe this, with one article even saying that 1/3 of millennial are in this group. You cover so much, I can't possibly dig deeper into everything. I like reading the subscribers comments, and always find them informative as well. Again, thank you, and thanks for the videos and musical interludes to break up the more depressing items.
“Honest, dispassionate discussions of alcohol use are nearly impossible in America because booze is so heavily intertwined as a cultural symbol of fun and a remedy for all our social ailments. Any criticism leads to knee-jerk reactions as if you’ve just slapped someone’s mother.”
I couldn’t agree more with this Kareem. Alcohol has been ingrained with American life at such an extreme level with no regards to health or the mental state it truly leaves people in..
Some short takes. Desantis is trying to be Duterte-lite. I took my granddaughters to the Barbie movie and guffawed from the opening credits to the end. Great stuff. Mom’s first job out of college was as a taste tester for Ancient Age bourbon. Lots of murders in Kentucky, no papers left here to pushback. Ivan Illich describes his Catholic Church ‘the corruption of the best is the worst’. Only thing better than the video is seeing it live, I treasure what performances I’ve witnessed.
Hi Kareem. Were you taught by Sisters of Charity at your grade school? I was taught by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at my school in Louisville. They are still deserving my respect for how they live their lives together with purpose. Moxie is not a strong enough word to describe them. They live out the phrase ‘if God is on my side, of whom should I be afraid?’
Thanks for always including tasteful jazz and other musical videos in your pieces. Makes for a great ending to your thoughtful writing! Also enjoyed your piece on how you write your weekly posts. Might I also suggest the Financial Times and the Economist as must reads for your daily/weekly perusals? I find them to provide unique non-US-centric insights into world events and not just financial news -- interesting perspectives on culture, politics and other issues.
Thanks again for regular thoughtful adult content. Rare these days.
With my best wishes for your peace and good health,
I was just commenting on the debate - and the state of the Republican party. I have no inclination to support her either! I believe the only way to stabilize our government is to vote as blue as possible next year!!

Well and nobly done, Mr. Abdul-Jabbar. I regard you as a shining public intellectual, which is why I subscribe.
