Loving your columns, Kareem - this coming from a 73-year-old raised in a WASP-R environment. I gave a gift subscription to my brother. You open my eyes wider to the world around me more than just my years of experience have.

Your reference to the Pledge of Allegiance reminds me of a family story. My parents were both born in 1938 so when they went to school, the pledge of allegiance was still in its original form. When they heard my cousin recite it in the early '60s, they thought she was saying it wrong! I'm glad to read a reminder that the original pledge upheld the principle of the separation of church and state.

John Oliver does a great job of in depth examination of DeSantis. Long but worth a look... What bothered me most was his voter intimidation of black people by arresting them at their homes, but eventually having their cases thrown out. (long video - but worth it to understand how bad this person would be for our country if he were to be elected--funny /but mostly scary )

Commenting on Shasta county - this county had the fourth highest Covid death rate by county in California. So we already know they are anti-science and common sense. So of course voting machines that represented the counties voting accurately are suspect. This to me , is a boon to Dominion showing real damages , because the lying at Fox moved these sheep to consuming lies and turning it into action.

Hi Kareem - boy do I love your column. That said, something struck me today. You use this term "sub-human" in referring to a sub-culture of politicians. No matter what you and I might think of these people, they are nonetheless human. Frankly, I think using this term (and other disparaging or insulting terms about the other) has a negative impact on the conversation at large. It makes it easier for us to simply write them off as "sub-human" and it gives them fodder for their apparent outrage (did you hear? Kareem called us sub-human!). No matter what else we might think, feel or believe about these people on the extreme other end of this spectrum, we nonetheless share our humanity with them. I think that owning and embracing that reality, that fact, is crucial if we are going to find some common ground, some way to all play nice in the sandbox of our world.

I grew up in the '30s and '40s - and I still say the pledge the way it was originally written...I just shut up when others utter that "under God" addition. If we examine the pledge closely, in the current social climate, we probably need to excise the word "indivisible" and possibly "liberty and justice for all." With people like DeSantis, Gaetz, Taylor-Greene et al making mockery of the guts of the pledge, they seem intent on burying our nation into a revival of the Dark Ages!

Getting lost in all the music. Floating through my real home in outer space. Takes me back to the time of new growth & awareness. Wayne Shorter's music always did that for me. And this video and celebration of his music is quite wonderful. The looks on the faces of his musicians - priceless. Thank you for bringing it to us.

And ice cream, of course. We would all be happier, like the adorable baby. Grab on with both hands. Eat it up. My favorite - black raspberry with dark chocolate chunks. Totally addictive

All those people who want to rule the universe. As you said, you must accept the fact that they are sub-human. They will never reach Nirvana or attain enlightenment because their brains were either malformed or they have permitted bogus belief systems to take hold. Their only solution is to try to control others because they have no power over themselves. They are full of total & utter nonsense.

The "uprising" in Shasta County is quite alarming. This hotbed of right-wing people & beliefs reminds me that similar goings-on happened before in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. White supremacists and all their ilk. Remember M Fuhrman from the OJ trial? He moved there at one time. Claimed not to be one of those people.

It's all so mind-boggling how irrational beliefs take hold in people's brains. And then they keep hearing this garbage & it replaces all the rational thoughts & ideas. Total brainwashing.

We must keep speaking the truth even when so many have chosen not to believe. Keep up your work. Never stop trying.

And always bring the music. Thank you over & over.

Thanks yet again, Kareem.

It's sad to note the parallels between the end of Germany's Weimar Republic and the current political climate in the United States. History is repeating itself before our eyes...this time in our own front yard.

The fascist idiots who claim to uphold our Constitution are the very people who are shredding it via their selfish and reckless actions and statements. United we stand, divided - the Russian, Chinese, North Korean and Iranian governments will make efforts to exploit the weakness. Those nations are all undoubtedly salivating like rabid dogs waiting for a scrap of meat - and the United States is on the menu for the taking. History repeats itself, but also expands into new chapters. What's next? I'm afraid to turn the page, so I'll put the book down for now and enjoy my life as I know it.

I got to see Wayne with Jack De Johnette at the Blue Note - that was one hell of a show. Clark Terry was there too! Awesome!

Kareem, that baby looks like me when I get some new bud from the local dispensary. (smile) That was a great video...better than MTG stalking a Sandy Hook survivor.

Peace and Serenity

Thanks for your newsletters, I look forward to them. All I can say about the GOP whether they are in Florida or Shasta County - they are edging or already Fascists and don’t come at me people. They are there - and if DeSantis is elected, he will stomp all over the Constitution he will swear to uphold. As far as Shasta County and every other Republican stronghold, they don’t seem to care when their own die which I don’t understand - these are their constituents and frankly, numbers. They need every frickin’ number they can get without cheating and we know they cheat. As far as banning Dominion voting machines then they can go back to paper ballots which is the way we all used to do it and guess what? In California, since we are all sent mail-in ballots WHICH ARE PAPER, we can mail them in, bring them in to local election office or HORRORS! Drop them in a ballot-box that is secure. I actually think paper ballots are more secure than machines. When I used to vote in person we still used paper ballots locally, we didn’t have machines. These days with hackers, I wouldn’t trust them - not because of the company that makes the machines but the bad actors like hackers from Russia, North Korea, China... why anyone would listen to an idiot like Mike Lindell about anything is beyond me..or MTG or McCarthy or Gaetz or...insert right wing name here. They have no evidence to back up anything they say and really don’t care if they do. They make it all up anyway - including Trump. The rest of us ask for proof and get none and never will get it.

We really do live in the strangest times. Thank you for promoting facts and sanity.

I am truly disheartened that a conservative woman in Shasta County, CA is afraid, because she’s not conservative enough. Truly, what is wrong with these extremists?

Every column is a gem. And thanks for reminding everyone how seminal Wayne S was and is. He is so wise and articulate on the dvd BEYOND THE NOTES that even those who "don't like jazz" should listen.

Great Game of Thrones analogy of the anti-woke mob penetrating our defenses Kareem. Make no mistake. The anti-woke strategy of DeSantis and others will take over the narrative in the Republican primaries and ultimately the general election like locusts devouring fields of crops, unless, unless we have a strong counter narrative that resonates. As Kareem points out, freedoms are being devoured under the auspices of creating more freedom (to live in a Beaver Cleaver fantasy world of distorted Christian reality - "American Sharia"). I call it the "ANTI-WOKE CHOKE". Choking off our ability to express ourselves, evolve and have basic rights against a Sharia-like movement in the name of anti drag, "parental rights" and DEI gone crazy. Sure feels like DeSantis and the coordinated groups writing bills to cancel drag shows, teachers ability to teach, etc. are wrapping their hands around the neck of so many of us. The time is now to push back strongly and use terms that call it what it is and get some effective momentum going: The anti-woke choke of our rights to be a diverse, free society.

Apparently, Wayne Shorter was a huge Lakers fan. He was to headline the Sunday show of a Playboy Jazz Festival but went onstage early in the afternoon in order to watch the Lakers close out the finals. When we exited the Hollywood Bowl, World Champion Lakers shirts were being sold on the sidewalks.
